The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) is the only international physics organization that is organized and run by the physics community itself. Headquartered in Geneva, IUPAP was founded in 1922 to assist in the worldwide development of physics, to foster international cooperation in physics, and to help in the application of physics toward solving problems of concern to humanity.
In 2021 IUPAP moved its administrative headquarters to Trieste, from where FIT provides it with logistical and administrative support; the two organizations collaborate closely to promote scientific research and the diffusion of physics in Trieste and around the world. The new IUPAP headquarters in Trieste was built by FIT for ESOF 2020 and is located in the Porto Vecchio Electric Substation.
The 32nd IUPAP General Assembly took place in Geneva on 9 October 2023: the new administrative secretariat managed by FIT was praised for its efficiency (article on the website of the Italian Physical Society).
